The group was organized and chartered as the Massanutton Chapter in 1897, with Mrs. John Paul as Regent. The series is separated into categories and arranged in chronological order. Sub-series B: Garden Club Awards and Pressbooks, 1964-2001, this series contains press clippings regarding garden club activities and booklets related to the contests entered by Garden Club members. Sub-series C: Garden Club Scrapbooks, 1962-2009, this series contains the scrapbooks of the Garden Club. This series also contains garden show programs from shows hosted by the Southside Garden Club and a few other local garden clubs.","The Southside Garden Club began as a committee under the governance of the Blacksburg Woman's Club. In the 1920s, in order to generate more interest in the Woman's Club a committee was formed known as the Garden Committee. The committee first met in February of 1928, and in March of 1930 the committee voted to withdraw from the Woman's Club and form its own independent organization. From the very beginning the Garden Club was concerned with community involvement and civic interests including the beautification of Blacksburg. In the late 1930s, the Garden Club's membership had grown beyond the capacity that could be accommodated by meetings in women's homes, in order to solve this problem, the club voted to split into three groups, the Arboretum Garden Club, Southside Garden Club, and Town and Country Garden Club.","The Southside Garden Club, so named because many members lived on the south side of town, was federated in 1941. The Southside Garden Club continued the tradition of community involvement. In 1952, the club voted in favor of having women on the town council and in 1963, succeeded in making Blacksburg a bird sanctuary. It has furnished flowers and plants for various public buildings such as school grounds, Historic Smithfield, and the public library. Members of the Southside Garden Club have also participated in many contests and won awards in categories such as Garden Therapy and Horticulture. The group was organized and chartered as the Massanutton Chapter in 1897, with Mrs. John Paul as Regent. The name \"Massanutton\" and its spelling have been a topic of interest on several occasions through the years.","It has been an active chapter, participating and often initiation public celebrations of such annual patriotic remembrances as Flag Day, George Washington's Birthday, and Constitution Week. The chapter contributed to several national war efforts over the decades, as well as to local endeavors such as equipping a room in the Hospital. It has placed several historical markers in the area, and sponsors programs and essay contests in local schools to stimulate an appreciation for American history. In the 1960s and 70s, members compiled several lists of otherwise unnoted county graveyards (A Record of Burial Places in Rockingham County, Va.; Church and Family Cemeteries, Eastern Section, Rockingham County, Va.); produced a unique list of inns titled Ordinaries of Rockingham County and Harrisonburg, Va. 1778-1855; and compiled Revolutionary Soldiers, Rockingham County, Va. These works were sent to the Virginia State Library. Also in recent years, the chapter has held a ceremony after naturalization proceedings to welcome new citizens.","Acid-free interleaving paper was used extensively in minute books to buffer text from newspaper clippings; archival tape was used to mount loose clippings on bond paper; and the most brittle single sheets were placed into Mylar sleeves. In order to streamline the process of applying collection numbers, Special Collections staff completed a large-scale renumbering campaign in the spring of 2017. For example chapter reports can also be found in officer's reports and concerts and contests can be found in officer reports and also under their own folder. Theory and sight readings, auditions, grants and additional financial information can be found in officer's reports. Music Teacher's National Association records are mixed in with Virginia Music Teacher's Association records and many other music subject headings, as well as in folders by their own heading. The records came to us in this order. In 1981, VCPN was transferred to James Madison University when Dr. Joann Grayson and student, Charlotte McNulty, won a bid from the Department of Social Services to take over the newsletter. Each newsletter focuses on one or more topics in child welfare and spotlights local organizations in Virginia that are dedicated to the issue's related topic. Topics included physical, sexual, and emotional abuse; missing children; and the impacts of drugs and alcohol. Some of the articles provide a survey of literature, address current and practice issues, or discuss grants for Virginia community projects.
