Previously, the records in this collection were part of the Alexandria Library Records (MS098) but were separated and combined with new materials to form a separate collection.","The physical and intellectual arrangement of the Alexandria Library Board Records (MS416) is as follows: Series 1: Administrative Records and Correspondence and Series 2: Meeting Records. Future accretions to this collection will be added to existing series.","When the Alexandria Library was established as a public library in 1937, a Board of Directors was established to perform administrative tasks and oversee operations for the library. The duties of the board were laid out in the 1937 Library By-Laws, which included generating reports to present to the Alexandria Library Company.","In 1947, new by-laws were written and updates were made to the structure of the Board. The Board was renamed The Alexandria Library Board (rather than the Board of Directors) and was determined to be made up of seven members. Wire","Series X: Flyers","Inspired by the recently established Annandale Christian Community for Action, 17 Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, and Baha'i congregations of Alexandria came together in May 1969 to form ALIVE! (Alexandrians Involved Ecumenically) to coordinate their charitable efforts to provide assistance to those in need in their community. The number of member congregations grew from 17 to 27 by 1973, 35 by 1983, 38 by 1994, to 42 today.","At least through 1994, presidents of ALIVE! served for only a single fiscal year with the exception of founding president Bob Young, who served two non-consecutive terms. Present-day executive directors by contrast have served as long as a decade. The club consisted of women in their late 20's or early 30's, with young children, seeking to get together for recreation and friendship. While the informal club began at Florence Dempsey's on South Overlook Dr., the club became official in 1945, with a constitution and a slate of officers selected, with Mrs. Raymond (Florence) Pfeiffer as president, and 40 charter members. The meetings were bimonthly, no dues were collected, but an offering was taken up for expenses and the rest given to the Red Cross. Because of overwhelming popularity, membership was limited to 75, and a boundary set to Beverly Hills. In 1955, due to an interest in the garden section of the club, membership was extended to persons outside of Beverly Hills. The Garden section eventually split off in 1955, and became a sister club. However, interest was still so great, that by 1962, meetings needed to be held in public auditoriums (e.g. Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Pepco Building, the No. 3 Firehouse, the Woodward and Lothrop Building, and Trinity Methodist Church).  \n    The club served not only as an outlet, but as a civic organization. The club sponsored beautification projects, advocated for road safety, raised money for playgrounds, and began a Christmas decoration contest that attracted national attention.
