Gladstone was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1930 and graduated cum laude from Washington and Lee University in 1952. Three years later, he received his Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School. For the next thirty years, Gladstone practiced law in Dade County, Florida at August, Nimkoff and Gladstone. In 1973, he was elected Circuit Judge for the 11th Judicial Circuit, Florida. Subsequently, he focused on the juvenile and family divisions. From 1982 to 1983, Gladstone served as Special Advisor on matters of juvenile justice and youthful offenders from the judiciary to the Governor and Secretaries of Health Rehabilitative Services and Corrections of the State of Florida. Retiring as full time judge in 1993, Gladstone spent a year with U.S. Senator Bob Graham as Special Advisor and in the meantime designed the Youth Environmental Service.
