Also included here is a single folder of materials issued by other southwestern Virginia organizations including the Blacksburg Recorder Society, the Blue Ridge Chamber Music Players, and the Pulaski Music Club.","Series II. Virginia Federation of Music Clubs, 1933-1971. Included in this series are materials relating to the state organization. A folder of materials from the federation's first district, to which the Blacksburg club belonged, consists largely of programs from annual conventions. The remainder of the series contains communications to local clubs and convention programs, as well as administrative and promotional materials","Series III. National Federation of Music Clubs, 1944-1971. This series includes materials received from the local club by the national organization. The series contains reports, circular letters, announcements and other communications; price lists for instructional materials sold by the federation; and printed materials consisting of promotional, instructional, and administrative materials.","A musical appreciation club had been founded in Blacksburg, Virginia as early as 1904. That club was succeeded by the Music and Dramatic Club, founded in 1912 and disbanded around 1928. The Blacksburg Music Club was organized on October 24, 1931, with a goal \"to promote the study of musical art among its members and to stimulate the interest in and appreciation of good music in the community.\" The club soon thereafter became affiliated with the Virginia Federation of Music Clubs and the National Federation of Music Clubs. Club meetings were held monthly from September through May, and programs were staged at various sites in the Blacksburg area and on the campus of Virginia Tech. The club worked closely with other local organizations, including the Blacksburg Concert Association, the Blacksburg Recorder Group, the VPI Glee Club, and the VPI Orchestra, and supported musical programs in local schools by donating money for two pianos, providing funds for special events, and donating the time of members for musical instruction. The series is separated into categories and arranged in chronological order. Sub-series B: Garden Club Awards and Pressbooks, 1964-2001, this series contains press clippings regarding garden club activities and booklets related to the contests entered by Garden Club members. Sub-series C: Garden Club Scrapbooks, 1962-2009, this series contains the scrapbooks of the Garden Club. This series also contains garden show programs from shows hosted by the Southside Garden Club and a few other local garden clubs.","The Southside Garden Club began as a committee under the governance of the Blacksburg Woman's Club. In the 1920s, in order to generate more interest in the Woman's Club a committee was formed known as the Garden Committee. The committee first met in February of 1928, and in March of 1930 the committee voted to withdraw from the Woman's Club and form its own independent organization. From the very beginning the Garden Club was concerned with community involvement and civic interests including the beautification of Blacksburg. In the late 1930s, the Garden Club's membership had grown beyond the capacity that could be accommodated by meetings in women's homes, in order to solve this problem, the club voted to split into three groups, the Arboretum Garden Club, Southside Garden Club, and Town and Country Garden Club.","The Southside Garden Club, so named because many members lived on the south side of town, was federated in 1941. The Southside Garden Club continued the tradition of community involvement. In 1952, the club voted in favor of having women on the town council and in 1963, succeeded in making Blacksburg a bird sanctuary. It has furnished flowers and plants for various public buildings such as school grounds, Historic Smithfield, and the public library. Members of the Southside Garden Club have also participated in many contests and won awards in categories such as Garden Therapy and Horticulture. The first officers of the chapter were Mrs. Paul Barringer, Regent; Miss Ellen McDonald, Vice–Regent; Mrs. Alexander Black, Treasurer; Mrs. J.S.A. Johnson, Recording Secretary; Mrs. Nelson Mayo, Corresponding Secretary; and Mrs. James Otey, Registrar and Chair of the History Committee. Many of the charter members were descended from pioneers who held land in the New River section of the Alleghany Mountains, now known as \"Trans–Alleghany Pioneers.\" The original members chose the name \"Alleghany\" over an individual hero of the Revolutionary War as their name, to preserve the colonial history and traditions of the region.","The chapter members erected several markers in Blacksburg and the region memorializing people and events of its colonial history. The first land for the cemetery was purchased seven months later, on October 11, 1850, from Harrisonburg's first mayor, Isaac Hardesty, who sold 2½ acres to the cemetery company. It has continued to expand in size over the years, and the current grounds cover about 18 acres. Woodbine Cemetery contains roughly 11,550 burial plots with approximately 9,000 interred.","Soon after the Civil War, the cemetery created an area dedicated to Confederate soldiers and veterans.
