Riegel's professional career began as a reporter and editor for the Chicago Tribune in the 1920s. He then shifted his focus to the information gathering and application, attaining a Bachelor's degree in the field from Dartmouth College and later attending Washington and Lee University.","Riegel became an internationally-known expert on the topic of propaganda in the 1930s after extensive studies of its importance in modern politics. His monograph, Mobilizing for Chaos: The Story of the New Propaganda, was published in 1934 and focused on the role propaganda was playing in the rise of National Socialism in Germany.\nIn his studies he amassed an extensive collection of American, European, and Asian propaganda spanning World War I through the Cold War. Aspects of his compilation of propaganda studies are included within this collection.\nRiegel joined the Washington and Lee University Journalism Department in 1930 and was named department head in 1934. He served as department head until his retirement in 1973. Within each year, materials are arranged by subject file.","A native of Rural Retreat, Virginia, Stuart Kent Cassell, Jr. (1910-1976) first came to Virginia Tech in the late 1920s as an undergraduate, receiving a bachelor's degree in animal science in 1932 and a master's in economics in 1933. He became an instructor of agricultural economics in 1933, and in 1939 he was appointed state executive officer for the Agricultural Adjustment Administration. Appointed finance and business manager in 1945, he was an administrator under four presidents. He was instrumental in the planning and long-term development of Virginia Tech to accommodate its steadily increasing enrollment. He was also a member of the board of directors of VPI Facilities, Inc. and the Virginia Tech Student Aid Association. He was named vice president for administration by President T. Marshall Hahn, Jr. in 1966. He died in October 1976 at the age of 66. The Stuart K. Cassell Coliseum was named in his honor and dedicated on September 17, 1977.","The guide to the Records of the Office of the Vice President for Administration, Stuart K. He trained primarily in Florida, spent three months in England, and was then transferred to France.  He was next stationed in Belgium, where he saw significant combat.  He earned a medal for his involvement in the Battle of the Bulge (1944-1945).  His letter correspondence is largely with his mother, Julia Kibler (Mrs. Benton Koontz).  From 1945 to 1946 he remained in the army and worked with recovering soldiers at Woodrow Wilson Hospital in Fishersville, Virginia.\n    He was discharged in May 1946, whereupon he took the position of English teacher at Florida Southern College; he eventually became the head of the department.  In 1949 William returned to the University of Virginia to study German and French; during this time he taught Freshman English.  From 1950 to 1952 he studied, wrote, and published \"I Don't Know Why,\" a book of 25 short stories about his observations of country life in Virginia.\n    From 1951 to 1956/7 he worked for a secret branch of the government – the Armed Forces Security Agency, a forerunner of the National Security Agency – intercepting messages during the Korean War.  He informed the United States government mostly about economic and living conditions in North Korea.  He would transition from educating military officers to teaching their children at the Columbia Preparatory School in Washington, D.C., where he taught for six years, becoming the head of their English Department.\n    From 1964 to 1965 William traveled around the world in about eighty days; this adventure would inspire him to spend the next twenty years visiting more than thirty countries – he toured most of Europe, Central and South America, portions of Asia and Africa, and sections of the Middle East.  Notably, during his 1976 trip to the Middle East, he narrowly missed an attack by a terrorist group.  He would eventually return to Virginia, where he continued to teach and write. Chiswell mined lead ore on the New River in Augusta County (now Wythe County) from 1760 to 1766, and furnished large supplies of lead to Virginia during the French and Indian War. A fort and trading post were sut up at this time near the mines. Chiswell died in 1766, and ownership of the mines was trasnferred to William Byrd. The mines were leased to the state during the Revolutionary War.","In 1789 Moses and Stephen Austin contacted for the lead mines and bought them from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Due to mismanagement, the lead mines reverted back to the state in 1802. In 1806, Thomas Jackson bought the proerty, now in the town of Austinville, in Wythe County, at a public auction in Richmond. Chiswell mined lead ore on the New River in Augusta County (now Wythe County) from 1760 to 1766, and furnished large supplies of lead to Virginia during the French and Indian War. A fort and trading post were sut up at this time near the mines. Chiswell died in 1766, and ownership of the mines was trasnferred to William Byrd. The mines were leased to the state during the Revolutionary War.","In 1789 Moses and Stephen Austin contacted for the lead mines and bought them from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Due to mismanagement, the lead mines reverted back to the state in 1802. In 1806, Thomas Jackson bought the proerty, now in the town of Austinville, in Wythe County, at a public auction in Richmond. He constructed a shot-tower on the New River, which operated from 1812 to 1830 and still stands today.","From 1830 to 1898, the property was mined by Daniel Sheffey and David Pierce or their descendants. From 1838 to the 1850s, the firm was called the Wythe Lead Mines Company. The Union Lead Mine Company, as it was called in 1860, contributed more than 2,000 tons of lead to Confederate troops in the Civil War. After the discovery of zinc in the 1860s, the Union Lead Company formed the Wythe Lead and Zinc Company.","The Wythe Lead and Zinc Company sold all of its ore in 1898 to the Bertha Mineral Company, which operated in Pulaski, six miles northeast of Austinville. She pioneered street theater in Harlem and later founded EcoTheater in West Virginia, a community-based theater project.","Maryat Lee was born as Mary Attaway Lee in Covington, Kentucky on May 26, 1923, to Grace Barbee Dyer Lee and Dewitt Collins Lee. Maryat, as she came to be known, grew up with her musician mother, lawyer and businessman father, and two older brothers, John and Robert.","She graduated from Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible History in 1945.","In the following years, Lee was employed in various jobs in New York City, including editing religious films, transcribing oral history tapes for Columbia University, and serving as an assistant to Margaret Mead at the Society for Applied Anthropology.","Inspired by a conversation with East Harlem storefront church ministers about declining local interest in religion and surging drug usage, Lee sought to become acquainted with the population of Harlem, a largely African American neighborhood in New York City. This led to the writing of her first play, DOPE! which began showings in storefront churches, on sidewalks, and in alleys in 1951, using the local people Lee had met in Harlem as actors. Interest in this street theater, as it would come to be known, faded quickly, but it set the foundation for much of Lee's later work.","In 1957, she met and began a friendship with author Flannery O'Connor that would last until the latter's death in 1964. That same year, in 1957, she married Australian furniture designer David Foulkes Taylor in Japan. The couple parted ways soon after, and Taylor died in a car accident in Australia in 1965.","In 1966, Lee began a long business and romantic relationship with photographer Fran Belin, with whom she would go on to co-found the Women's Farm and EcoTheater.","She founded the East Harlem Soul and Latin Theater (SALT) in New York City in 1970, building upon her work with Harlem residents seventeen years prior. SALT used non-actors and encouraged audience reactions in opposition to what Lee viewed as the more stifling contemporary theater.","Soon after, Lee parted ways with SALT after troupe members became discontented with the way she was handling copyright of the works produced, and the troupe dissolved two years later.","In 1971, Lee moved to Powley's Creek, West Virginia with Belin and founded the Women's Farm, as part of a wider Back-to-the-land movement that occurred in America in the 1960s and 1970s. The Women's Farm sought to provide a work retreat for artists and musicians and serve as the foundation for a new type of local theater.","During this time, Lee focused on learning about her local community in Hinton, West Virginia, and wrote plays inspired by what she heard, including John Henry and Ole Miz Dacey. Both plays would be shown on Lee's farm and performed by youth from the Governor's Summer Youth Program, marking the beginning of EcoTheater in 1975.","EcoTheater, described by Lee as \"indigenous Appalachian theater\" produced plays based on oral histories collected from the local community, and as with DOPE! and SALT, used non-actors in its performances.","In 1984, Lee moved to Lewisburg, West Virginia, where she worked on her EcoTheater Workbook.
