It began in 1859 as the almshouse, established to care for the city's indigent population. During the Civil War it operated as General Hospital Number 1, and was the temporary headquarters for the cadets of the Virginia Military Institute from December 1864 to April 1865. The property reverted to its former function at the conclusion of the war. In 1873, part of the building was converted into a city hospital that provided general surgery, medicine, and obstetrical services.","A reform-minded Richmond City Council changed the name of the institution to the City Home in 1905. The Home focused on caring for the elderly and neglected children. The city constructed an additional building in 1908 to house African American patients, replacing the previous facility located near Franklin Street. Also a tubercular pavilion for African Americans was built and used from 1915 to 1936. In 1916 the city acquired Pine Camp Tubercular Hospital and it operated as a branch of the City Home. The ordering of the collection was begun again in December 1986 and is comprised of the following Series: I-Personal Information and Correspondence 1914-1975; Series II-Church membership 1954-1969; Series III-Correspondence 1916-1978; Series IV-WRVA Radio (program, broadcast and publicity materials) 1926-1961; Series V-WRVA Radio Managerial materials; Series VI--WRVA TV 1952-1968; Series VII-Central Virginia Educational Television (CVETV) 1961-1963; Series VIII--Historical Publications and Materials; Series IX--Miscellaneous n.d.\n\n Additional ordering, photocopying of news clippings and separation of the photographs from the collection will take place as time and staff permit. Several scrapbooks which were donated at a later date by Mr. Lucy's son are located in the oversize area with other scrapbooks.\n\n ","Born in Baltimore, MD, on 8 October 1891, Calvin T. Lucy was educated at Baltimore City College (a public high school for boys) and graduated in 1909. While taking night school classes at BCC in commercial subjects, Lucy also worked at Crown Cork and Seal (1909-1912) in Baltimore. In 1912 he took a job with Reed Tobacco Company (a subsidiary of Laurus and Co.) as office manager and book keeper. Promoted in 1918 to general office manager for Laurus, Lucy left this position to serve in the army during World War I. He resumed his career with Laurus after his discharge and steadily advanced in management."," Given the responsibility of establishing a radio station in Richmond, in 1925, Lucy served as announcer, writer, producer, performer and general manager during the early years of WRVA. Non-commercial until 1928, WRVA then became an affiliate of NBC and C.T. moved into the sales and advertising portion of the operation. He supervised and managed the 5 kw station established in 1929; the 50 kw in 1938, and subsequently rose to Vice President with responsibility for radio and television."," Lucy was active in the broadcasting profession and was an early member of the National Association of Broadcasters. He was the first president of the Virginia Association of Broadcasters and the original chair of the (CBS) Columbia Affiliates Advisory Board. An active citizen in the Richmond community, Lucy was also a member of the Community Fund, the Scottish Rite Masons, the Chamber of Commerce, and of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and its governing body."," Lucy retired from the Laurus Company in 1961 and moved from Richmond to his farm near Ladysmith, VA. During his retirement he played a key role in the establishment of educational television in Richmond by providing technical assistance and served as a general consultant for the project. He was the son of Archer Hart and Catherine Massie Shelton Anderson. As a young man, Anderson attended private school at his grandfathers home, where he was taught by his two maiden aunts. The young J.J. Anderson also worked as a telegraph operator for the Norfolk and Western Railway Co. In 1891 Anderson entered the Medical College of Virginia and graduated with the class of 1893.","Dr. Anderson began practicing medicine in 1893 at Waltons Store in Louisa County. The doctor later moved to Goochland where he served on the local board of health, and was active in the liberty loan drives during World War I. He practiced as a family practitioner in Goochland until 1922.","In 1922 Dr. Anderson moved to Richmond where he spent the rest of his life. His Richmond home and office was located at 2220 Grove Avenue in the fan district. Anderson was a member of the American Medical Association, the Richmond Academy of Medicine, and the Medical Society of Virginia in which he was a 50 year member. He was also a member of the Dove Lodge Number 51, A.F.8 A.M., and the Tabernacle Baptist Church. Dr. Anderson was available for emergency medical services, state side, during both world wars","Dr. Anderson was married to Temple Drudge Anderson. The couple had no children. On May 19th, 1949 at the age of 79, Dr. Anderson died at his home in Richmond. He was buried at the Hollywood Cemetery.","The papers of Joseph J. Anderson, cover from his matriculation at MCV in 1891 to his death in 1949. The majority of the papers are personal, and have been arranged into four series.","Series I (1892-1980) contains a wide variety of correspondence and legal documents. What stands out are various letters of recommendation written by prominent MCV physicians recommending Dr. Anderson to positions at the state hospital in Petersburg, as well as the position of doctor to the penitentiary farm. The letters recommending the doctor to the penitentiary farm are all addressed to Governor Charles T. O'Ferrall. These letters are accompanied by 3 petitions signed by MCV professors, and Virginia politicians.","Also included in this series are license applications to practice, spanning the years, 1893-1908, from Louisa and Goochland counties. There is a letter confirming his availability for emergency medical services during World War I from 1918, as well as questions to Dr. Anderson that were asked during a court case. No date accompanies the questions. This series also has one biographical sketch, as well as a letter pertaining to the collection both from 1980.","Series II (1906-1944) simply represents some of Dr. Anderson's financial records. The series consists of two small ledger books, which date from 1/1/06-1/1/08. The books correspond to his Goochland practice. There is also one large ledger book, which includes accounts from the years 1/1/40-5/44. The names and addresses of some of the patients are listed as well as visit prices.","Series III (1891-1948)comprises Dr. Anderson's educational records. Included in this series are three subseries, the first being the actual school materials and the other two being certificates and photographs, respectively. The contents of subseries A are his matriculation cards, graduation papers, one note book, two exams, two session books, which contain class descriptions, and Alumni matters. The Alumni matters contain lists of deceased doctors from various graduating classes at MCV. Subseries B contains certificates awarded to Dr. Anderson over the years. Included is Dr. Anderson's actual diploma, there are also four more certificates dating back to 1905. The land was first used in 1786 by the Chevalier Quesnay de Beau Repaire as the location of his Academy of Arts and Sciences. The school only lasted a few years and Quesnay returned to France. One of the buildings that survived was the assembly hall that was quickly converted into the Academy Theatre. It was there that Virginia ratified the Constitution of the United States in 1788. In 1802, the wooden theater caught fire and burned to the ground, but another was erected on its foundation.","This new theater was very popular and often drew large crowds. On December 26, 1811 the theatre was full. During a scene change, a lantern caught the stage backdrop on fire and soon the entire stage was ablaze. In the aftermath of the fire 73 people, mostly women, were killed including Governor George William Smith. The next day a town commission met and resolved to create a memorial to those who died on the theaters grounds. Monumental Church became this memorial.","Two heroes who emerged from the inferno were Gilbert Hunt, an enslaved blacksmith and Dr. James McCaw, a Richmond physician (and grandfather of Dr. James B. McCaw).","Opened in 1814 the Church was built on land \"for ever kept sacred\". In a vault under the church lay the bodies of those who perished that night, and several plaques and memorials line the churches walls. Chief Justice John Marshall was instrumental in the initial phases in creating this Greek revival church. And after it opened, Marshall was a congregation member. Designed by Roberts Mills, Monumental is the only surviving Church Mills designed with its dome intact. The church was known as Monumental Episcopal Church.","As the City of Richmond grew so did the Medical College of Virginia, taking up most of the city plots around the Church. Under an agreement with Virginia Commonwealth University the Church became a religious center for the student body supplementing its own congregation in 1958. After a major renovation phase of the Church that began in 1960, the Episcopal diocese found the cost too high and moved the congregation to a newer building in 1965. Ownership transferred to the University who attempted to continue the renovations. The Church was listed on National Registry of Historic Places in 1971. The University gave Monumental Church to the Historic Richmond Foundation in 1983, and they began a series of restorative projects that are ongoing.","The collection includes minutes of the Monumental Church Endowment, correspondence with J. Over the next ten years she attended several other schools, including Mary Baldwin College and the University of Virginia, before receiving a liberal arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. During her lifetime she was recognized by VCU, the Junior League, and the Federated Arts Council for her commitment to the city, its people, and its culture.
