He spent the majority of his career with the General Electric Company, in which he held a number of senior management positions before his retirement in 1952. Milton was the first VMI Superintendent to come to the job from an exclusively non-military background. Upon his appointment as Superintendent in August 1952 he was appointed a Major General in the Virginia Militia (Unorganized).
