The jail was later moved to the foot of Wolfe Street before moving again to a new building constructed around 1825 on the northeast corner of Princess and North St. Asaph Streets. The St. Asaph Street building served as the city jail for over 150 years. Other Church Records and Miscellaneous Materials, arranged chronologically.","In 1830, African American members of the Trinity Methodist Church decided to form their own congregation. They formed the Methodist Episcopal Church which became more firmly established with the building of a chapel in 1834. This chapel, named the Davis Chapel, after a white minister, was renamed the Roberts Chapel in 1844 giving the congregation its current name. Until the Civil War, white ministers led the church, but after 1866 African Americans have filled the pulpit.","No year appears in this record book. Using a perpetual calendar based on the dates of the Sundays for each month, it appears likely that these contributions came in the years 1921 and 1922. Since the record book itself appeared in 1918 as indicated by the words \"1918 Edition\" on the cover, it seemed likely that it was used sometime soon after that. The years 1921 and 1922 were the first possible. Other possible years included 1938/1939, 1949/1950, and 1960/1961, but it did not seem likely that the record book dates from those years. Researchers may want to verify this by checking the addresses of the members in city directories or other sources during the years 1921 and 1922.","Originals are still held at the Roberts United Methodist Church.","The original collection consisted of a variety of record books and other loose materials. The books recorded the attendance at the Sunday School as well as more general church events, such as a list of contributors or the events of the quarterly conferences on the condition of the church. The Company bought it's first engine in 1794 from Philadelphia, which required a \"station\" to keep it. Before this time, the company had no headquarters but met at local taverns and meeting halls. The station was built on land given to it by First Presbyterian Church. By 1800, the company was expanded to include nearly sixty two volunteers. By 1806, the old engine was showing its age and a new one was procured from Philadelphia. In 1836, the company built a new house on a plot of land given by the 2nd Presbyterian Church, on the east side of S. Fairfax st. between Prince and Duke. In the 1950's, the church wished to use the land, and the company moved to Prince st. between Fairfax and Royal St. By this time the company was made up of 80 members and owned two engines and 500 feet of hose. The engines were named \"Relief\" and \"Washington.\" During the Civil War, the engine company was taken over by the federal military. The engines were not taken care of, and in some cases destroyed by the federal troops, so that by the end of the war the Relief Company was in shambles. However, by 1867 the company received a new truck (a hook and ladder truck), a new name (The Relief Hook and Ladder Company of the Alexandria Fire Department), and a new home (the Star Engine House on South St. Asaph st.). The Company moved back to its previous location in 1874. In 1915, the Company moved to its final location, a new building on 313, 315, and 317 Prince st. The first half of the sub-series of mostly group photographs and is arranged by fire company, keeping the Hook and Ladder No. 1, Engine and Truck No. 1, Potomac, Columbia No. 4, and Relief No. 5 together.  The rest of the sub-series is arranged by subject, including funerals for specific firemen, Christmas celebrations, and portraits of members of the AFD.","Ashton \"Mike\" McKenney was a long time member of the Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department, starting in 1940.  Later in his career, he worked as the historian for the AFD and wrote  A History of the Relief Truck and Engine Company No. 1 of the Alexandria Fire Department (1788-1958) . In 1956, Mike moved in with close friend Thomas Mills, Jr. and his family. He retired in 1972 from the Dulles International Airport Fire Department, and lived out his days with the Mills family in Colonial Beach where he was a charter member of the Colonial Yacht Club.","Thomas Mills III was a firefighter with the Alexandria Fire Department.  Both he and his father had a penchant for grabbing their camera while headed to a fire, in order to capture the efforts of the fire companies.
