Items with no date and items with an identified month and day but no year are listed as \"undated\".","The family papers of Corie Lynn Dorset Rivers include over 140 separate letters and other manuscript documents handed down to Rivers by her mother, Corie Lynn Slater Dorset. This collection includes papers written by several generation of Williamsburg, Virginia residents, including Lucy Ludwell Paradise; James and Louisa Bellett Lee and family; and Virginia Lee and Parkes Slater and family.","Series One consists of the oldest item in this collection, a ledger or commonplace book originally kept by Lucy Ludwell Paradise, dated 1805 inside the front cover. This ledger was perhaps also used in some capacity by James Lee, whose name appears on the front outside cover of the book, and then his daughter Virginia Helena Lee Slater, whose signature appears on several pages on pasted-in clippings. Lucy Ludwell Paradise lived in the historic Williamsburg Ludwell-Paradise home until 1812. In 1816, James Lee purchased the house.","The clippings and other materials integrated into the leger book or saved between its pages may come from throughout the nineteenth century, but most seem most likely to date from the second half of the century. Since almost all of the pages of the original ledger book are covered by clippings, most original written text, if any, is not visible. However, on at least two pages, portions of accounting entries made by Lucy Ludwell Paradise are visible.","Series Two is composed of letters to and from members of the James Lee family, including correspondence with the Teagle family, also of Williamsburg, Virginia. The Lee and the Teagle families were related through the mothers of each family, Louisa Bellett Lee and Susan Bellet Teagle, who were sisters. This series contains documents relating to management of the estate of Edward Teagle. Also included in this series are academic essays written by Philip Ludwell Lee, son of James and Louisa Lee, from when he was a student at William \u0026 Mary in the 1830s.","Series Three includes papers relating to Virginia Lee Slater's family. JOHN HARTWELL COCKE PAPERS:\n            #5685, #5685-a.","John Hartwell Cocke was born in 1780 in the Tidewater county of Surry, the son of John Hartwell and Elizabeth\n         (Kennon) Cocke. By the age of twenty-one, Cocke was the master of over 5,500 acres of land in Surry and Fluvanna counties. A\n         few years after Cocke married Anne Blaws Barraud (\"Nancy\") of Norfolk, Virginia in 1802, he sold his Surry County holdings\n         and moved to a frame dwelling at Bremo Recess, Fluvanna County, and began work on a finer home, \"Bremo.\" He owned\n         three large plantations along the James River, Bremo Recess, Upper Bremo, and Lower Bremo, each containing over a thousand\n         acres of land. During the War of 1812, Cocke served in the Virginia militia, rising from captain to brigadier general in\n         eighteen months. Series 1 covers Teddy Tucker's Papers; Series 2 covers the papers of Teddy Tucker's immediate family;  Series 3 covers the papers of the extended family; Series 4 covers related Taliaferro-Bolton families; and Series 5 consists of artifacts.","Edward \"Teddy\" Bolton Tucker was born in Bermuda on May 8th, 1925 to Edward Henry and Sue Taliaferro Bolton.  Teddy became an underwater explorer, teacher, treasure hunter, and pioneer.  He earned the Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth II.  Other achievements include the discovery of more than 100 ship wrecks off the Bermuda coast, work on the Beebe science project with National Geographic, collaboration with the University of Maryland to study gill sharks.  Following service with the Royal Navy during World War II, Teddy endeavored to make a living as a salvage diver.  He taught himself about ships, nautical history, and underwater archeology.
