Materials that have not been microfilmed are open for research. The 43 boxes of paper materials which have not been filmed are available for viewing on site. The record books which have not been filmed are primarily stored off site. This collection is arranged into three series: Microfilm, Paper Materials, and Record Books.","Series 1- Microfilm includes 768 reels of microfilm. The first 38 reels of the microfilm are copies of the card index. Reels 39-247 are copies of record books (Series 3), and the remainder are copies of paper materials (Series 2). Most of the record books on microfilm are court records, but there are also several private record books of local businesses and organizations. Reels 125-247 include several duplicates of earlier reels. Reels 81, 95, 114-124, 249-250, 278-279, 302-303, 325, 335-336, 338, 372-373, 376, 378, 381, 395, 400-403, 418-427, and 432-437 do not exist because the collection was reprocessed; all material is available either on microfilm or the original materials. Family Papers is divided by family name.","Series II. General Genealogical and Historic Papers is divided by type of material.","Pauline Englehard Burks, a Richmond, Virginia resident, researched the genealogy of her husband's (Broaddus Vaughan Burks) family. In doing so, she amassed correspondence, account books, receipts, newspapers, and other documents about the Broaddus, Burks, Edmonds, Taliaferro, and Vaughan families of Amherst County, Virginia. In 1995 she published the book Roots, Shoots and Runners: Taliaferro, Broaddus, Burks, Vaughan and Allied Families As Seen in Their Letters, Bible Records and Family Papers.","Alexander Hairston Burks married Ellen T. Broaddus. In 1879, their second child, Franklin \"F.T.\" Taliaferro Burks (1849-1921), would marry his second wife, Hortense Washington Vaughan (1867-1955), the youngest of the four children of Dr. Washington \"Wash\" L. Vaughan and Francis \"Fannie\" Shields. Her siblings included noted doctor and surgeon Dr. George Tully Vaughan; Eugene Neville Vaughan; and Matilda Corinne Vaughan Hoffman. F.T. and Hortense Burks had 4 children: Pearl Burks Rossner Burnley Miles; Frank T. Burks, Jr.; Garnett M. Burks, who married architect Lorenzo Simmons Winslow; and Broaddus Vaughan Burks. Broaddus Burks (1898-1985) married Pauline Genevieve Englehard (b. 1909) in 1931, and they had two children.","The guide to the Pauline E. Burks Family Papers include correspondence, account books, essays, receipts, newspaper clippings, family Bibles, and plats and surveys of the Broaddus, Burks, Edmonds, Taliaferro, and Vaughan families of Amherst County, Virginia.","Papers about the families include 18th-century land and property information for Virginia and 19th-century financial papers and ledgers as well as both personal and business correspondence. Most early materials pertain to the Broaddus, Edmonds and Taliaferro families. More contemporary materials from the late 19th and 20th centuries are found in the Vaughan and Burks papers. Most of the 20th-century papers are the informal correspondence of the Broaddus and Pauline Burks family, dating from the 1930s to the 1980s.","Other materials include a set of transcriptions of record books from Amherst County, Virginia from a series called Courthouse Miniatures, and other printed materials, such as magazines and newspapers. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and served in the British navy. He moved to the colony of Virginia in 1755, landing first in Norfolk before moving to Williamsburg. There, he was commissioned as an ensign to serve under Col. George Washington. He engaged in border warfare. Fleming eventually settled in Staunton where he married Anne Christian on April 9, 1763. He gave up medicine for farming in Botetourt County (now Montgomery) at his estate called Bellmont. From 1777-1779, he represented several districts, including Kentucky, in the Virginia Senate. He took an active part in Western Affairs, twice heading commissions to Kentucky. In his last appearance as a public servant, Fleming represented Botetourt in the state convention which ratified the Federal Constitution. Fleming died on August 5, 1795.","Anne Christian Fleming was born in 1744 in Staunton, Virginia to Israel and Elizabeth Christian. She had two siblings: William and Rosanna. Anne and William Fleming married in 1763. They had two children: Ebenezer and Annie.","WLU Coll 0003: George A. Baxter family papers","This collection contains papers created by or related to William and Anne Fleming and several family members on Anne's side, including her parents, Israel and Elizabeth, and her brother, William.","The subjects include Fleming's accounts of his trips to Kentucky, his journal of the first Kentucky convention of which he served as chair, letters about business, Kentucky land claims, and family affairs. There are commissions, wills and estate inventories, land surveys and indentures, a manuscript map, and documents related to Indigenous nations. Other documents mention enslaved people, usually those who were to be inherited. One folder holds items specific to Kentucky but there are other documents throughout the collection that also have relevance to Kentucky, such as correspondence, land records, and receipts. Daniel Boone's name can be found throughout the collection as he was hired to survey land within what is now Kentucky. Notable signatures within the collection include Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, James Monroe, and Benjamin Harrison. The collection also includes an account book kept by Fleming between 1765-1783. Some accounts are medical in nature.
