Lee was the commanding General of the Confederate Army in the Civil War. Lee was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, in 1807. His father was Major General Henry Lee III (\"Light Horse Harry\"). Lee attended West Point, graduating at the top of his class. Lee was opposed to the succession of the southern states; however, he stood by his native state. After the Civil War Lee became the President of Washington College (present day Washington and Lee University) in 1865 and held that position till his death.
