He graduated from Plano Senior High School in Plano, Texas in 1987 and then went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from the United States Air Force Academy in 1991. He attended Oxford University from 1991 to 1994 where he received a Master of Philosophy and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Politics. Later, in 2003, he earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School. He became the president of Hampden-Sydney College in 2009 and then in 2016, he left Hampden-Sydney and became the president of Robert Morris University until 2021. He graduated from Plano Senior High School in Plano, Texas in 1987 and then went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from the United States Air Force Academy in 1991. He attended Oxford University from 1991 to 1994 where he received a Master of Philosophy and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Politics. Later, in 2003, he earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School. He became the president of Hampden-Sydney College in 2009 and then in 2016, he left Hampden-Sydney and became the president of Robert Morris University until 2021.
