The Sierra Club has a long history of political organizing, and in the 1950s-1960's expanded its grassroots organizing efforts nationally, eventually opened chapters in all 50 states.","The West Virginia chapter was formed from the Potomac Chapter, which served a larger area including Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. Prior to the chapter's formation, The Monongahela Group operated as a sub-group of the Potomac Chapter, and in 1977 began seeking accreditation. The group served Monongalia, Preston, Marion, and Talyor Counties, and held regular meetings and organized around regional issues such as National Forest preservation, the Canaan Valley Development Authority, land and water preservation, and mining and drilling. The West Virginian Chapter officially became the 57th chapter in 1984, with Dr. Katharine Gregg as the chairman.","Records of the West Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club, an American environmental preservation organization.
