He was a tailor by trade.  He married Sarah F. Farish (1829-1916) on 16 April 1857. During the Civil War he was a Captain of Company A, 19th Virginia Infantry. He was wounded seven times during the war and lost a leg during the Battle of Five Forks and was taken prisoner. He lived the rest of his life in Charlottesville.\n","John and Sarah were the parents of Charles E. (1858-1917), Lewis (1860-), Robert E. (1867-1944), and John Cleburne (1871-1918). John Cleburne Culin II was also tailor and lived in Charleston, South Carolina and Charlottesville, Virginia. He married Lilian Molter. His son, John Cleburne Culin III (1896-1918), served in the 116th Infantry during World War I and was killed in France on 17 October 1918.
