On January 13, 1837, from the \n         House of Delegates, \n         Alexander Rivescomplains to \n         Thomas Maurythat \"our party here, alack\n         the day! is so far behind the spirit of their constituents,\n         that they are most ingloriously succeeding on many occasions,\n         to their enemies.\" On November 2[ ], 1855, \n         A. J. Meigswrites to Maury and mentions\n         the latter's \"disorder.\" There are letters of recommendation\n         and introduction for \n         Matthew Fontaine Maury, Jr.during 1852\n         and 1857. \n         J. Delafieldwrites to \n         Matthew Fontaine Maury, Jr., in \n         Liverpool, on March 26, 1862, introducing\n         Captain Clemenshaw who is recommended to Maury as a navigator\n         in the \n         Confederate Navy. A copy of a letter,\n         August 27, 1862, from \n         Rutson Maury, Jr.to \n         Rutson Maury, sends news of the family,\n         the actions of Federal troops, and Union designs on\n         Confederate ports, and mentions the absence of James. There\n         are several letters to Maury from \n         J. Delafieldand \n         A. S. Elmigerbetween 1862-1863,\n         requesting to see him, apparently in relation to a financial\n         dispute between them; letters of May 30, June 11, and June 16,\n         1863, detail the dispute. On April 7, 1863, \n         Keating and Companywrites to \n         J. Delafieldasking for his opinion on the\n         present state of the Confederate loan, and the prospect of\n         recovery. \"Hawkeye\" writes to Maury on April 17 and 20, 1863,\n         in regard to a controversy over an article in \n         The Mercuryentitled \"Exposure of Northern Ladies,\" and a Mr.\n         Spencer's actions concerning it. There is an interesting\n         letter, April 25, 1863, from \n         James Mauryto \"Skinny Murphy,\" containing\n         a cypher to \"defy the inquisitors of even these miserable\n         Yankees,\" and mentioning doing business with a Jew \"in whom is\n         plenty of guile\" and having an interest in acquiring English\n         milking cows and seed. \n         Rutson Maurywrites to \n         Matthew Fontaine Maury, Jr., on April 28,\n         1863, mentioning that he had been reading a story for Sunday\n         school children, \"Little Ben, the motherless boy.\" \n         Ann Maurywrites to \n         Matthew Fontaine Fontaine, Jr., on June\n         12, 1863, concerning personal matters, and mentions living in\n         an atmosphere of tobacco and coal smoke with the comment\n         \"perhaps you think smoke is the best air for the lungs.\" \n         Rutson Maurywrites to Matthew on January\n         10, 1868, in a hand similar to gothic, that it is not yet\n         decided who the Latin professor at \n         Columbia Collegewould be. In a letter\n         dated March 1, 1869 from, New Orleans, \"Alex\" writes to Maury\n         confidential news of jealousy against Maury in the office. In\n         a letter dated July 16, 1869, Abraham writes to \n         Matthew Fontaine Mauryrequesting a copy\n         of the \"Fontaine and Maury\" family book. Included with a March\n         13, 1870 letter from \n         A. M. Claytonto Maury, there is a\n         newpaper article, which mentions a railroad accident near \n         Oxford, Mississippion Southern RR track\n         and includes the official comment by Col. \n         Sam Tate, president of the railroad. \n         Walker Maurywrites to \"Liz,\" on May 5,\n         1870, mentioning that Matthew may be back from England in\n         mid-October. Among the undated correspondence, \n         J. R. Lawrenceclaims that he will send\n         money to Maury once he is paid.","The business papers date 1793-1869 and n.d. There is a\n         report, \"Staves Most Suitable for the English Market,\" from\n         the \n         Drysdale Brothersdated October 12, 1866.\n         From 1867, there is a tide and shipping record, which includes\n         an account with \n         Maury and Company, noting import duties\n         on alcoholic beverages, and an attached card, \"Rates of\n         Compressing Cotton from \n         Cotton Press Association of New Orleans\"\n         for the year ending August 31, 1868. There is also a telegram\n         sent from the \n         Maury Bros.to the \n         Adderly Bros.on August 24, 1869: \"Tobacco\n         much shortened by drought,\" with a note warning of tobacco\n         speculation. There are minutes of the \n         Albemarle Agricultural Societyre\n         preparation for the annual show.","Legal papers are for the period 1806-1823.
