Positioned halfway between Alexandria and Winchester, Middleburg served as a rest stop for those who traveled Ashby Gap Road, now U.S. Highway 50, which connected the Potomac River with the Shenandoah Valley for trading. Middleburg served as a meeting place for both Union and Confederate troops during the Civil War.
