The New York Times, July 29. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/30/arts/zelda-fichandler-a-matriarch-of-regional-theater-dies-at-91.html.","Zelda Fichandler was born Zelda Diamond on September 18, 1924 in Boston, Massachusetts to Harry and Ida (née Epstein) Diamond. Her father, a Russian immigrant, worked as an engineer and inventor for the National Bureau of Standards and during World War II helped in the development of proximity fuses. Her mother, a Lithuanian immigrant, worked as a secretary in her husband's laboratory before becoming a full-time homemaker. Zelda's family moved to Washington, D.C. when she was four years old and Zelda credits her role as Helga in a production of Helga and the White Peacock at the age of 8 as the experience that introduced her to what would become her professional career. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, Zelda briefly attended college locally before enrolling in Cornell University where she earned a degree in Russian language and literature and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1945.","Zelda returned to Washington, D.C. where she met Thomas C. Fichandler, an economist employed in the Treasury Department and Social Security Administration, on a blind date. The two married in 1946, the same year that Zelda enrolled in a graduate program at George Washington University (GWU). While initially planning a career in the sciences, particularly as a psychoanalyst, Zelda abandoned these plans following a lab-accident involving hydrochloric acid, and eventually earned her Master of Arts degree in 1950, writing her thesis on \"Shakespeare and the Soviet Union.\" It was during her time at GWU, where she performed on stage as part of the GW Players, that Zelda was inspired by a conversation with her professor, and head of the Drama Department, Edward Mangum to start a professional theatre company in Washington, D.C., with the goal of expanding the reach of professional theatre beyond the confines of New York City's Broadway district. Zelda was inspired in this endeavor by the trailblazing companies established in the 1940s by Nina Vance in Houston (Alley Theater) and Margo Jones in Dallas (Theater '47).","In 1950, Zelda, her husband Thomas, and Edward Mangum raised $15,000 and purchased and renovated the 247-seat Hippodrome Theater, a former burlesque house and pornographic movie theater. They opened their first production as Arena Stage on August 16, 1950 (Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer directed by Mangum) and presented an ambitious 18 productions during their first season. From its beginning, Arena Stage welcomed audience members of all races, becoming the first theatre in Washington, D.C. to play to integrated audiences. In the 1950s, Arena Stage became one of the first theatres in the country to employ a company of minority actors.","In 1951, Mangum left Arena Stage to lead a theatre in Honolulu, Hawaii and Zelda assumed the title of Artistic Director, a position she would hold for nearly 40 years, until her retirement in 1990. A few years later, Thomas would leave his job as an economist and take over as Arena's full-time Executive Director. By the mid-1950s, Arena Stage had outgrown the Hippodrome and moved into a former brewery known as the Old Vat. In 1961, they commissioned a permanent custom-designed building at its present location in Southwest Washington, D.C. designed by architect Harry Weese which consisted of an 800-seat \"theater-in-the-round\" (rededicated in 1992 as the Fichandler Stage in honor of both Zelda and Thomas). Weese would go on to design Arena's \"Stage II\" expansion (later named the Kreeger Theater) which opened in 1970, as well as Washington, D.C.'s Metrorail system.","Arena Stage's breakthrough production opened in 1967, with the premiere of The Great White Hope. Based on the life of heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson, and breaking ground in its portrayal of an interracial couple on stage, the play was written by Howard Sackler, with editing and revision assistance from Zelda prior to the play's premiere, directed by Edwin Sherin and starred then unknown Arena Stage company actors James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander. After drawing enthusiastic reviews, the play became the first regional theatre premiere to transfer to Broadway, where it would go on to win the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize. However, this success resulted in a loss for Zelda and Arena Stage, with much of the play's cast leaving Washington, D.C. to reprise their roles on Broadway and in the 1970 film adaptation. Additionally, Arena Stage had failed to make arrangements to share financially in these later profits, leading to a lengthy legal dispute and serving as a lesson for Zelda that would influence her handling of future original and collaborative works that originated at Arena Stage.","In 1973, Arena Stage became the first regional theatre to be selected by the U.S. State Department to tour the Soviet Union, performing Inherit the Wind (directed by Zelda) and Our Town (directed by Alan Schneider) in both Moscow and Leningrad (now known as St. Petersburg), and in 1976 Arena Stage became the first company outside of New York to receive a Tony Award as the recipients of the first annual award for Excellence in Regional Theatre. Under Zelda's artistic guidance, Arena Stage gained a reputation as a major venue for emerging playwrights, and pushed to increase the visibility of international directors and writers to American audiences, earning her the national reputation as the \"Matriarch of American Regional Theatre.\"","While still serving as Artistic Director of Arena Stage, in 1984 Zelda became Chair of the Graduate Acting Program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, a position she would hold until 2009. In 1990, Zelda formally retired from Arena Stage, but would still remain in communication with the company she founded, returning to direct her final production, Clifford Odet's Awake and Sing! in 2006. Soon after retiring from Arena Stage, Zelda served briefly as the Artistic Director for New York University's The Acting Company. In 1996/1997 she was awarded the National Medal of the Arts by President Bill Clinton and in 1999 she was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame in New York.","Zelda and Thomas separated in the mid-1970s, though they never divorced and maintained a strong working relationship until Thomas retired from Arena Stage in 1986. The couple had two children together, sons Hal and Mark. Thomas passed away on March 16, 1997 at the age of 81. Zelda passed away on July 29, 2016 at the age of 91. She is buried, alongside Thomas, in Washington, D.C.'s Congressional Cemetery.","Collection processed by Meghan Glasbrenner from September 2023 - September 2026.
