He constructed it specifically for his two unmarried daughters, Lizzie and Virginia, who was Robert E. Lee's only godchild. The Virginia Military Institute purchased the home in 1945 because it essentially bordered institute property. In 1952, a fire destroyed the home's distinctive cupola.
