White graduated from Cape Charles High School in 1941 and served in the United States Army during World War II with the 26th Infantry Division. He later transferred to the Army Air Forces Cadet Pilot Training Program and earned his pilot wings in 1945.  White was training as a B-25 bomber pilot when the war ended. After he was discharged, White attended the Medical College of Virginia (now Virginia Commonwealth University), earning his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1950. He subsequently received honorary degrees from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (Master of Pharmacy, 1966) and Shenandoah University (Doctor of Science, 2001).","After beginning his pharmacy career in Luray, Winchester, and Front Royal, Virginia, White established a pharmacy in Berryville, Virginia, where he practiced for more than four decades. White was disillusioned by the commercialism of the profession. He wanted to change the community pharmacy from a retail store that also dispensed medication to an office-based pharmacy practice focused on patient care. At the center of this concept was the patient medication profile record, which documented a patient's prescriptions, allergies, and medication history. In this period, patients were increasingly seeing more than one physician. The record helped to prevent duplicate prescriptions, adverse drug reactions, and contraindications. While this is a standard process today, it was a new concept in 1960, when White created it. He remodled his retail pharmacy into an office practice, opening on November 15, 1960.","White publicized his ideas through professional publications, lectures, and advocacy, including his 1978 book, The Office-Based Family Pharmacist. His patient medication profile record became a foundational principle of modern pharmacy practice. Pharmacists from around the world visited his Berryville pharmacy to learn more about the office-based practice. Pharmacy historians have cited his pioneering work as a pivotal development in the profession's transition toward patient-oriented pharmaceutical care.","White received numerous professional honors during his career, including the Remington Honor Medal and the inaugural Daniel B. Smith Practice Excellence Award, both given by the American Pharmacists Association. His alma mater honored him with the VCU Medical College of Virginia Alumni Association Outstanding Pharmacy Alumnus Award in 1989. White's Berryville pharmacy, which he closed upon retiring in 1998, was later preserved by Shenandoah University as a museum exhibit and teaching resource documenting the evolution of community pharmacy practice.\nWhite married Laura Juanita LaFontaine in 1948, and they had two daughters. He was active in his community as a member of the  Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, the Berryville/Clarke County Chamber of Commerce, the Northampton/Cape Charles Chamber of Commerce, and American Legion Post 41.
