He entered the VMI in July 1860, where he served as a cadet until the outbreak of the Civil War in April 1861. On April 16, 1861, he accompanied the Corps of Cadets to Richmond, Virginia where he served as a drillmaster to new\nConfederate recruits. Gatewood subsequently served in the same capacity under General Robert S. Garnett at Laurel Hill, Barbour County, West Virginia. He joined the 11th Virginia Cavalry Regiment in March 1862 and was elected 2nd Lieutenant,\n\"F\" Company (Bath Squadron). He served in this unit until the end of the War.","At the close of the Civil War, Gatewood returned to Bath County. His father had died suddenly in 1861 without leaving a will, and as the oldest son, he took on responsibility for his family's affairs. As a young man he undertook the study of law, and in late 1846 he obtained his license and opened a practice in southwestern Virginia. He served in the United States Army during the Mexican War (1847-1848), and subsequently returned to  practice of law in Estillville and Abingdon, Virginia. In 1857 he was elected judge of the thirteenth judicial district and held this position until the beginning of the Civil War. He was a member of the VMI Board of Visitors from 1852 to 1854 and from 1857 to 1858. During the Civil War he served as Colonel of the 37th Virginia Infantry Regiment. He was killed in the Battle of Gaines's Mill, Virginia on June 26, 1862.","Abram Fulkerson, Jr. (1834-1902) was born on May 13, 1834 in Washington County, Virginia and was the younger brother of Samuel V. On December 31, 1861, Roller entered VMI as a second classman and graduated in July 1863. He subsequently taught mathematics at VMI for a few months, and then was appointed as a 2nd Lieutenant, Company G, 2nd Confederate States Engineers in October 1863. He served as an engineer officer in the Army of Northern Virginia until the end of the Civil War, and was paroled at Appomattox, Virginia.","After the War, Roller he studied law at the University of Virginia and practiced law in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Brooke enrolled at VMI in July 1857 and was a cadet for one year. He subsequently attended the University of Virginia, and in April 1861, he joined the Confederate Army.","In May 1861 Brooke commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with Company I, 47th Virginia Infantry Regiment. In May 1862 he was promoted to Captain. He served with this unit until the end of the Civil War.","After the War, Brooke resided in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he studied law and opened a practice. In 1882 he moved to Roanoke, Virginia, where he was a newspaper editor and Clerk of Court. He married Bettie Lewis Young in 1872 and the couple had six children: Samuel, Henry, Edgar, Vena, Sarah, and Cary. Brooke died on January 10, 1918 in Roanoke.","The Samuel S. Jackson was orphaned at a\nyoung age and he was raised by extended members of his\nfather's family, mainly his uncle, Cummins Jackson.","Jackson graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in June 1846 and subsequently served in the United States Army, during which time he fought in the Mexican War. Jackson resigned his commission in 1851, after he was appointed Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy at VMI. He moved to Lexington, Virginia and settled into life as a civilian.","In April 1861, Jackson rode off to war. Following the first Battle of Manassas (Virginia), he became widely known by the nickname \"Stonewall\" and earned lasting fame for his leadership of Confederate forces, especially during the Valley Campaign of 1862.","Jackson died on May 10, 1863 as a result of complications from wounds received at Chancellorsville, Virginia along with pneumonia.
