(Randy) Hawthorne was a student at the College of William and Mary from 1963 to 1967, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He went on to obtain his J.D. in 1970 and a M.L.T. in 1971, both from the College of William and Mary. In 1970, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army Reserve. After leaving William and Mary, he served in the U.S. Army and eventually worked in a private accounting practice in Williamsburg, Virginia. Hawthorne remained connected to track and field at William and Mary after graduation, creating Track Talk, a newsletter for William and Mary track alumni in 1976, as well as raising funds to benefit the track and field program. In 2008, Hawthorne was awarded the William and Mary Alumni Medallion, given by the William and Mary Alumni Association for his service and dedication to the College. After leaving William and Mary, he served in the U.S. Army and eventually worked in a private accounting practice in Williamsburg, Virginia. Hawthorne remained connected to track and field at William and Mary after graduation, creating Track Talk, a newsletter for William and Mary track alumni in 1976, as well as raising funds to benefit the track and field program.
