Trent was born on September 26, 1904. A native of Northfolk, West Virginia, Trent attended Bluefield Junior College in Bluefield, Virginia, where he earned a two-year academic diploma in 1925. In 1930 and 1931 he earned a BS and an MS in Electrical Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). In 1935 and 1936 he earned BS and MME degrees in Mechanical Engineering at VPI. Trent was appointed an assistant professor at VPI in 1931, teaching at first in the Department of Mathematics. In 1932 he was sent to Bluefield to organize the VPI Engineering Branch School in cooperation with Bluefield College. He served as head of the Branch School for eleven years. He returned to VPI campus in 1943, where he remained until his retirement in 1973, teaching both electrical and mechanical engineering.","Trent played an active role in the history of the Virginia Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) from 1945 until his death in 1991. In 1981 he was awarded the grade of Life Fellow of the ASME. Army and served with the Coast Artillery Corps and Corps of Engineers during World War II. Following the war, Holden worked briefly at the Glenn L. Martin Company--specializing in design of aircaft controls, heating and ventilation, and electronic equipment--before joining ACF Industries in 1947. As chief project engineer for railroad tank cars, Holden designed and developed new containers and manufacturing methods. His curriculum vita during this time period lists three patents held in his name. After obtaining a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech in 1942, Holden joined the U. S. Army and served with the Coast Artillery Corps and Corps of Engineers during World War II. Following the war, Holden worked briefly at the Glenn L. Martin Company--specializing in design of aircaft controls, heating and ventilation, and electronic equipment--before joining ACF Industries in 1947. As chief project engineer for railroad tank cars, Holden designed and developed new containers and manufacturing methods. His curriculum vita during this time period lists three patents held in his name. In 1973, Holden became a technical service engineer for the Bureau of Explosives (later Hazardous Materials Systems) within the Association of American Railroads (AAR). At the AAR, Holden responded to questions from manufacturers,  shippers, and railroad inspectors regarding tank car problems; assisted in the preparation of technical manuals; and participated in responses to--and clean-up of--railroad tank car accidents. Studying as a civil engineer, Drumeller attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute as a cadet from 1942-1943 and 1946-1949, taking a leave of absence in 1943 to fight in the U. S. Army during World War II, rising to the rank of Sergeant and earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He worked as a civil engineer with CSX Railway.
