He served in the Confederate cavalry. He graduated from the law department of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) and practiced law in Harrisonburg, Va. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates and as judge of the Rockingham County Court. O'Ferrall served in the U. S. House of Representatives 1884-1893 and as governor of Virginia 1894-1898.
