In 1879, he established the Hampton Presbyterian Church, now known as First Presbyterian Church. He remarried after Diana's death to Margaret Cumming, and had several other children, including the Presbyterian Missionary, Calvin Knox Cumming. His son, Samuel Gordon Cumming, an attorney in Hampton, Virginia, died in 1920 after being shot by his wife, Elizabeth Bell Waller, following a divorce agreement. In 1879, he established the Hampton Presbyterian Church, now known as First Presbyterian Church. He remarried after Diana's death to Margaret Cumming, and had several other children, including the Presbyterian Missionary, Calvin Knox Cumming. His son, Samuel Gordon Cumming, an attorney in Hampton, Virginia, died in 1920 after being shot by his wife, Elizabeth Bell Waller, following a divorce agreement. From 1952 to 1962 he served in the State Senate of Virginia. He was lieutenant-governor of Virginia from 1962 to 1966. On January 30, 1999, Mills E. Godwin Jr. died in Newport News, Virginia at the age of 84.
