He was in the class of 1881 at Washington and Lee University. He practiced law in Lexington before moving to Pittsburgh in 1890. He served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore in 1912, was a member of the committee to notify Woodrow Wilson of his presidential nomination, and served as Assistant Attorney General of the United States from 1913-1919 and as Judge of the U.
